God Never Sends You Out Alone

When you place your faith in Christ, Christ places his Spirit before, behind, and within you.
Not a strange spirit, but the same Spirit: the parakletos.

Everything Jesus did for his followers, his Spirit does for you.
Jesus taught; the Spirit teaches.
Jesus healed; the Spirit heals.
Jesus comforted; his Spirit comforts.
As Jesus sends you into new seasons, he sends His counselor to go with you.

God treats you the way one mother treated her young son, Timmy.
She didn't like the thought of Timmy walking to his first-grade class unaccompanied.
But he was too grown-up to be seen with his mother.

"Besides," he explained, "I can walk with a friend."
So she did her best to stay calm, quoting the Twenty-third Psalm to him every morning:
"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life..."

One school day she came up with an idea.
She asked a neighbor to follow Timmy to school in the mornings, staying at a distance, lest he notice her.
The neighbor was happy to oblige.
She took her toddler on morning walks anyway.

After several days Timmy's friend noticed the lady and the child.

"Do you know who that woman is who follows us to school?"

"Sure," Timmy answered. "That's Shirley Goodnest and her daughter Marcy."

"Who?"

"My mom reads about them every day in the Twenty-third Psalm.
She says, 'Shirley Goodnest and Marcy shall follow me all the days of my life.'
Guess I'll have to get used to them."

You will too.

God never sends you out alone.
Are you on the eve of change?
Do you find yourself looking into a new chapter?
Is the foliage of your world showing signs of a new season?

Heaven's message for you is clear:
when everything else changes, God presence never does.

You journey in the company of the Holy Spirit, who "will teach you and will remind you of everything I have told you" (John 14:26 NLT).

How a burnt out star can step out of the fire, victorious!!

Stars do burn out.. but leaders are more than stars..

Leaders have been annointed, appointed, and called.
Called into greatness,
But also called into the fire places.

And how a burn-ed leader responsed determined how he/she will come out of the fire.

Like sugar, we can turn black and harden..
we can start blaming everyone else for the things that didn't happened, nor what should happened..
we can be angry, and start to lash out at people, thinking that they didn't care..
We can form a wall against the very people whom we need to find comfort in...

OR

Like stones, we can remain lifeless..
we can start to be routine-ly...
without passion, without interest, without a desire to influence & impact..
we can still stay in the race, but its following the crowd.

there is no more stepping out.
everything that we can do is "safe",
but before long, we start to lose interest, and begin to look for greener pasture, usually outside the kingdom of God.

OR

Like bread, we can allow bitter yeasts to be fed into our lives, and help us grow..
we can be accountable, and allow our leaders to speak words of guidance.
words that may not sound nice, but surely, words that are Spirit-led.
words that like yeasts, help us to grow in our character.

there are times that i know i have to allow my leaders to speak to me..
to be more accountable,
to be more humble,
to be more willing to be invisible and let other lead,
to be more Christ like in my ministry,

to die to myself.

it wasnt always easy.
dying to my own desires or even feelings when i am feeling real bad, lousy and unappreciated.

even though my leaders may not be there for me, i MUST still share.
i MUST still listen to them, and pray through their words.
i MUST still serve, even though there is no fruits, becoz i MUST remain ready when God bring in the next harvest.
i MUST still seek God, even though God didn't answer my prayers, becoz i MUST remember that God is always bigger than my problems.

the heat may not decrease, but like bread, when i allow God to move, the yeasts will grow, and out of the lump of flour, bread will start to form.

Bakers don't bake the bread in fire for the whole day.
God know how much heat we can take.
And when we are ready, God will surely take me out of the fire, and prepare me for the next level.

Leavened bread are life giving.
How?

Your personal stories & testimonies will encourage others.
Your personal victories will inspires others.
But more than your victories, how God was able to bring you out of your defeats will motivate others to keep trusting God, even when all fronts are lost.

Do you enjoy bread?
I do.

And every time I enjoy bread, i can't help but remember how God will use the fires of life to make me better,
as a leader,
as a minister,
as a friend,
as a husband,
and soon, as a father.

My Salvation is About Him

Who would look at the cross of Christ and say,
"Great work, Jesus. Sorry you couldn't finish it, but I'll take up the slack."?

Dare we question the crowning work of God?
Dare we think heaven needs our help in saving us?

Legalism discounts God and in the process makes a mess out of us.

To anyone attempting to earn heaven, Paul asks,
"How is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable principles?
Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? ....
What has happened to all your joy?" (Galatians 4:19, 15 NIV).

Legalism is joyless because legalism is endless.
There is always another class to attend, person to teach, mouth to feed.
Inmates incarcerated in self-salvation find work but never joy.
How could they?
They never know when they are finished.

Legalism leaches joy.

Grace, however, dispenses peace.
The Christian trusts a finished work.
Grace offers rest.
Legalism never does.

Then why do we embrace it?
"Those who trust in themselves are foolish" (Proverbs 28:26 NCV).

Why do we trust in ourselves?
Why do we add to God's finished work?But the truth is, we don't.

If we think we do, we have missed the message.
"What is left for us to brag about?" Paul wonders (Romans 3:27 CEV).

What is there indeed?
What have you contributed?
Aside from your admission of utter decadence, I can't think of a thing.

"By his doing you are in Christ Jesus" (1 Corinthians 1:30).

Salvation glorifies the Savior, not the saved.Your salvation showcases God's mercy.
It makes nothing of your effort but everything of his.

"I--yes, I alone--am the one who blots out your sins for my own sake and will never think of them again" (Isaiah, 43:25, emphasis mine).

Can you add anything to this salvation?
No.
The work is finished.

Can you earn this salvation?
No.
Don't dishonor God by trying.

Dare we boast about this salvation?
By no means.

The giver of bread, not the beggar, deserves praise.
"Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 1:31).

It's not about what we do; it's all about what he does.

The request came when I was twenty.
"Can you address our church youth group?"

We aren't talking citywide crusade here.
Think more in terms of a dozen kids around a West Texas campfire.
I was new to the faith, hence new to the power of the faith.
I told my story, and, lo and behold, they listened!
One even approached me afterward and said something like, "That moved me, Max."
My chest lifted, and my feet shifted just a step in the direction of the spotlight.

God has been nudging me back ever since.

Some of you don't relate.
The limelight never woos you.
You and John the Baptist sing the same tune:
"He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less" (John 3:30 NLT).

God bless you.
You might want to pray for the rest of us.

We applause-aholics have done it all:
dropped names,
sung loudly,
dressed up to look classy,
dressed down to look cool,
quoted authors we've never read,
spouted Greek we've never studied.

For the life of me, I believe Satan trains battalions of demons to whisper one question in our ears: "What are people thinking of you?"

A deadly query.
What they think of us matters not.
What they think of God matters all.

God will not share his glory with another (Isaiah 42:8).
Next time you need a nudge away from the spotlight, remember:
You are simply one link in a chain, an unimportant link at that.

Remember the other messengers God has used?
A donkey to speak to Balaam (Numbers 22:28).
A staff-turned-snake to stir Pharaoh (Exodus 7:10).
He used stubborn oxen to make a point about reverence and a big fish to make a point about reluctant preachers (I Samuel 6:1-12; Jonah 1:1-17)

God doesn't need you and me to do his work.
We are expedient messengers, ambassadors by his kindness, not by our cleverness.
It's not about us, and it angers him when we think it is.
We who are entrusted with the gospel dare not seek applause but best deflect applause.

For our message is about Someone else.

God is for you.

Not "may be,"
not "has been,"
not "was,"
not "would be,"
but "God is!"

He is for you.
Today.
At this hour.
At this minute.
As you read this sentence.

No need to wait in line or come back tomorrow.
He is with you.
He could not be closer than he is at this second.
His loyalty won't increase if you are better nor lessen if you are worse.
He is for you.

God is for you.
Turn to the sidelines; that's God cheering your run.
Look past the finish line; that's God applauding your steps.
Listen for him in the bleachers, shouting your name.

Too tired to continue? He'll carry you.
Too discouraged to fight? He's picking you up.
God is for you.

God is for you.
Had he a calendar, your birthday would be circled.
If he drove a car, your name would be on his bumper.
If there's a tree in heaven, he's carved your name in the bark.
We know he has a tattoo, and we know what it says. "I have written your name on my hand," he declares (Isa. 49:16).

The Cure for Disappointment

Don't ask God to do what you want.
Ask God to do what is right.

When God doesn't do what we want, it's not easy.
Never has been.
Never will be.

But faith is the conviction that God knows more than we do about this life and he will get us through it. Disappointment is cured by revamped expectations.

I like that story about the fellow who went to the pet store in search of a singing parakeet.
Seems like he was a bachelor and his house was too quiet. The store owner had just the bird for him, so the man bought it. The next day the bachelor came home from work to a house full of music. He went to the cage to feed the bird and noticed for the first time that the parakeet had only one leg.

He felt cheated that he'd been sold a one-legged bird, so he called and complained.
"What do you want," the store owner responded, "a bird who can sing or a bird who can dance?"

Good question for times of disappointment.

Directions for the Road Ahead

The key question in life is not "How strong am I?" but rather "How strong is God?"

Focus on his strength, not yours.
Occupy yourself with the nature of God, not the size of your biceps.

That's what God told Moses to do.
Remember the conversation at the burning bush?

The tone was set in the first sentence.
"Take off your sandals because you are standing on holy ground" (Exodus 3:5).

With these eleven words Moses is enrolled in a class on God.
Immediately the roles are defined.
God is holy.
Approaching him on even a quarter-inch of leather is too pompous...

No time is spent convincing Moses what Moses can do, but much time is spent explaining to Moses what God can do.

You and I tend to do the opposite.
We would explain to Moses how he is ideally suited to return to Egypt...
Then we'd remind Moses how perfect he is for wilderness travel...
We'd spend time reviewing with Moses his résumé and strengths.

But God doesn't.
The strength of Moses is never considered.
No pep talk is given, no pats on the backs are offered.
Not one word is spoken to recruit Moses.

But many words are used to reveal God.
The strength of Moses is not the issue; the strength of God is.

Jesus Heals a Blind Man

"As [Jesus] passed by, He saw a man blind from birth" (John 9:1).

This man has never seen a sunrise.
Can't tell purple from pink.

The disciples fault the family tree.
"Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?" (v. 2).

Neither, the God-man replies.
Trace this condition back to heaven.
The reason the man was born sightless?
So "the works of God might be displayed in him" (v. 3).

Talk about a thankless role.
Selected to suffer.
Some sing to God's glory.
Others teach to God's glory.
Who wants to be blind for God's glory?

Which is tougher?
The condition or discovering it was God's idea?

The cure proves to be as surprising as the cause.
"[Jesus] spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and applied the clay to his eyes" (v. 6).

The world abounds with paintings of the God-man:
in the arms of Mary,
in the Garden of Gethsemane,
in the Upper Room,
in the darkened tomb.
Jesus touching.
Jesus weeping, laughing, teaching ...
but I've never seen a painting of Jesus spitting.

Christ smacking his lips a time or two, gathering a mouth of saliva, working up a blob of drool, and letting it go.
Down in the dirt.
(Kids, next time your mother tells you not to spit, show her this passage.)
Then he squats, stirs up a puddle of ...

I don't know, what would you call it?
Holy putty?
Spit therapy?
Saliva solution?

Whatever the name, he places a fingerful in his palm, and then, as calmly as a painter spackles a hole in the wall, Jesus streaks mud-miracle on the blind man's eyes.
"Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (v. 7).

The beggar feels his way to the pool, splashes water on his mud-streaked face, and rubs away the clay.

The result is the first chapter of Genesis, just for him.
Light where there was darkness.
Virgin eyes focus,
fuzzy figures become human beings,
and John receives the Understatement of the Bible Award when he writes:
"He ... came back seeing" (v. 7).

Come on, John!
Running short of verbs?
How about "he raced back seeing"?
"He danced back seeing"?
"He roared back whoopingand hollering."

He Did It Just For You

When God entered time and became a man, he who was boundless became bound.
Imprisoned in flesh.
Restricted by weary-prone muscles and eyelids.

For more than three decades, his once limitless reach would be limited to the stretch of an arm, his speed checked to the pace of human feet.

I wonder, was he ever tempted to reclaim his boundlessness?
In the middle of a long trip, did he ever consider transporting himself to the next city?
When the rain chilled his bones, was he tempted to change the weather?
When the heat parched his lips, did he give thought to popping over to the Caribbean for some refreshment?

If ever he entertained such thoughts, he never gave in to them.
Not once.

Stop and think about this.
Not once did Christ use his supernatural powers for personal comfort.
With one word he could've transformed the hard earth into a soft bed, but he didn't.

With a wave of his hand, he could've boomeranged the spit of his accusers back into their faces, but he didn't.

With an arch of his brow, he could've paralyzed the hand of the soldier as he braided the crown of thorns. But he didn't.

Want to know the coolest thing about the coming?

Not that he, in an instant, went from needing nothing to needing air, food, a tub of hot water and salts for his tired feet, and, more than anything, needing somebody--anybody--who was more concerned about where he would spend eternity than where he would spend Friday's paycheck.

Not that he kept his cool while the dozen best friends he ever had felt the heat and got out of the kitchen.

Or that he gave no command to the angels who begged, "Just give the nod, Lord. One word and these demons will be deviled eggs."

Not that he refused to defend himself when blamed for every sin since Adam.
Or that he stood silent as a million guilty verdicts echoed in the tribunal of heaven and the giver of light was left in the chill of a sinner's night.

Not even that after three days in a dark hole he stepped into the Easter sunrise with a smile and a swagger and a question for lowly Lucifer--"Is that your best punch?"

That was cool, incredibly cool.

But want to know the coolest thing about the One who gave up the crown of heaven for a crown of thorns?

He did it for you.
Just for you.

"Thine is the Kingdom..."

There are certain mountains only God can climb.
Ascend them and you'll end up bruised and embarrassed.
Stay away from them and you'll sidestep a lot of stress.

These mountains are described in the final phrase of the Lord's prayer,
"Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen."

A trio of peaks mantled by the clouds.
Admire them, applaud them, but don't climb them.

It's not that you aren't welcome to try, it's just that you aren't able.
The pronoun is thine, not mine; thine is the kingdom, not mine is the kingdom.

If the word Savior is in your job description, it's because you put it there.
Your role is to help the world, not save it.
Mount Messiah is one mountain you weren't made to climb.

Nor is Mount Self-Sufficient.
You aren't able to run the world, nor are you able to sustain it.
Some of you think you can.
You are self-made.
You don't bow your knees.
You just roll up your sleeves and put in another twelve-hour day..
which may be enough when it comes to making a living or building a business.

But when you face your own grave or your own guilt, your power will not do the trick.

You were not made to run a kingdom, nor are you expected to be all-powerful.

And you certainly can't handle all the glory.
Mount Applause is the most seductive of the three peaks.
The higher you climb the more people applaud, but the thinner the air becomes.
More than one person has stood at the top and shouted, "Mine is the glory!" only to lose their balance and fall.

"Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever."
What protection this final phrase affords.

As you confess that God is in charge, you admit that you aren't.

Getting Things Done..

Every now and then God gently taps you on the shoulder and reminds you of what life is all about.
I got just such a tap the other day.

It was a day when there was too many errands to run,too much work to doand not enough time in the day to do it.

I was rushed, stressed, and irritable.
I even snapped at my kids to hurry up and get ready for school as I worried about how I was ever going to get everything done that day.

It was then, however, that I got my gentle tap on the shoulder.
Actually, it was more of a one, two punch from my furry friends.

As I stood there frowning with worry and tensed up with stress, I felt a sticking in my left leg.
At the same time my right hand suddenly felt warm and wet.

I looked down and found one of my cats with her claws on my knee looking up with that scratch my head look in her eyes.
When I turned to my right I saw my drooling Saint Bernard nuzzling in for a few pets himself.

I smiled at my loving, furry friends and at the same time heard God’s gentle voice in my mind saying: “You are not here to get things done. You are here to love.”

I thanked God for the reminder as the stress disappeared and the worry faded away.
I gave each of my kids a hug before heading out to start the day.

I still had a lot to do, of course, but now I did it with a smile on my face.
I sang joyously along with the music in my car as I ran my errands.

I did my work at home happily and easily taking several breaks to pet my dogs, hold my cats, look at the Fall leaves, and to tell God just how much I loved Him.

I got everything done with time to spare and most importantly I did it all blissfully, peacefully, and lovingly.

The next time that the stress of getting things done starts to build up inside of you, then take a break and remember why you are really here.

In the end, it is the love we share, the joy we spread, and the happiness we create that matters.
Those are the things God wants us to get done.

why must a paying customer be asked to move every 6 months?

i don't get it.
why must we be asked to move to hall 1 every now and then?
its not as if we are getting hall 1 for free, or the overall rental will be lowered by a few hundreds of thousands..

nor the move(s) are fully sponsored.
nor people are employed to do all the physical works, without us paying.

all we wanted is to have a place to worship,
to reach out,
to encourage,
to serve,
to love,and be loved.

why are we always at the losing end?
especially when we are paying customers?
i dont hear our neighbours having the same issues,and they are USING the best hall.

the unlikely answer came when i threw the question to God.
in anger,
in frustration,
with a tired body,
and a more tired mind.

and with 1 answer,
God refreshed,
reminded,
and rechallenged.

God said:
"Because "My church" is still not big enough, and i have yet to use "My church" to build "My house" in the marketplace."

"Every move is to remind each other to pray for the church, and His leaders that we will be able to secure the land within this year (as what Ps mentioned during vision weekend)"

"Every move is to remind us that Expo & JW are the not His best plans for us yet, and that we must never think that we have "arrived" , and think its time to relax"

"Every move, no matter how tiring, is for a purpose of growth"
(but how? i still don't understand... but God knows, and I know I can trust Him.. )

"Every move is a reflection of His faithfulness & protection"

If Israel had travelled in the deserts for years, they must have built, torn down and rebuilt the tabernacle a thousand times...but not once did the people complained.
The priests continue to do their duties (and shiftings),
the people continue to draw closer to God,
the land of "milk and honey" became closer as the days start to grow.

Why should we complain now?
God will surely bring us to the promised "land"

What a statement of trust!
Whatever you want me to have is all I want.

Some days the plate runs over.
God keeps bringing out more food and we keep loosening our belt.
A promotion.
A privilege.
A friendship.
A gift.
A lifetime of grace.
An eternity of joy.

There are times when we literally push ourselves back from the table, amazed at God's kindness.
"You serve me a six-course dinner right in front of my enemies. You revive my drooping head; my cup fills with blessing" (Ps. 23:5 MSG).

And then there are those days when, well, when we have to eat our broccoli.
Our daily bread could be tears or sorrow or discipline.
Our portion may include adversity as well as opportunity.

This verse was on my mind last night during family devotions.
I called my daughters to the table and set a plate in front of each.
In the center of the table I placed a collection of food: some fruit, some raw vegetables and some Oreo cookies.

"Every day," I explained, "God prepares for us a plate of experiences.
What kind of plate do you most enjoy?"

The answer was easy.
Sara put three cookies on her plate.
Some days are like that, aren't they?
Some days are "three cookie days."

Many are not.
Sometimes our plate has nothing but vegetables--twenty-four hours of celery, carrots, and squash.

Apparently God knows we need some strength, and though the portion may be hard to swallow, isn't it for our own good?

Most days, however, have a bit of it all.
Vegetables, which are healthy but dull.
Fruit, which tastes better and we enjoy.
And even an Oreo, which does little for our nutrition, but a lot for our attitude.

All are important and all are from God.

The next time your plate has more broccoli than apple pie, remember who prepared the meal.
And the next time your plate has a portion you find hard to swallow, talk to God about it.

Jesus did.
In the garden of Gethsemane his Father handed him a cup of suffering so sour, so vile, that Jesus handed it back to heaven.
"My Father," he prayed, "if it is possible may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will" (Matt. 26:39).

Even Jesus was given a portion he found hard to swallow.
But with God's help, he did.
And with God's help, you can too.

When You Speak, God Hears

Those who pray keep alive the watch fires of faith.
For the most part we don't even know their names.
Such is the case of someone who prayed on a day long ago.

His name is not important.
He is important not because of who he was, but because of what he did.

He went to Jesus on behalf of a friend.
His friend was sick, and Jesus could help, and someone needed to go to Jesus, so someone went.

Others cared for the sick man in other ways.
Some brought food; others provided treatment; still others comforted the family.
Each role was crucial.
Each person was helpful, but no one was more vital than the one who went to Jesus.

John writes: "So Mary and Martha sent someone to tell Jesus, 'Lord, the one you love is sick'" (John 11:3, emphasis mine).

Someone carried the request.
Someone walked the trail.
Someone went to Jesus on behalf of Lazarus.
And because someone went, Jesus responded.

In the economy of heaven, the prayers of saints are a valued commodity.
John the apostle would agree.
He wrote the story of Lazarus and was careful to show the sequence:
The healing began when the request was made.

The phrase the friend of Lazarus used is worth noting.
When he told Jesus of the illness, he said, "The one you love is sick."

The power of the prayer, in other words, does not depend on the one who makes the prayer but on the one who hears the prayer.

We can and must repeat the phrase in manifold ways.
"The one you love is tired, sad, hungry, lonely, fearful, depressed."

The words of the prayer vary, but the response never changes.
The Savior hears the prayer.
He silences heaven so he won't miss a word.
The Master heard the request.
Jesus stopped whatever he was doing and took note of the man's words.
This anonymous courier was heard by God.

John's message is critical.
You can talk to God because God listens.
Your voice matters in heaven.
He takes you very seriously.

When you enter his presence, the attendants turn to you to hear your voice.
No need to fear that you will be ignored.
Even if you stammer or stumble, even if what you have to say impresses no one, it impresses God, and he listens.

Intently.
Carefully.

The prayers are honored as precious jewels.
Purified and empowered, the words rise in a delightful fragrance to our Lord.

"The smoke from the incense went up from the angel's hand to God" (Rev. 8:4).

Incredible.
Your words do not stop until they reach the very throne of God.

One call and heaven's fleet appears.
Your prayer on earth activates God's power in heaven.
You are the someone of God's kingdom.
Your prayers move God to change the world.
You may not understand the mystery of prayer.
You don't need to.
But this much is clear:
Actions in heaven begin when someone prays on earth.

What an amazing thought!
When you speak, Jesus hears.
And when Jesus hears, the world is changed.
All because someone prayed.

The Unsung Heroes

Hey All, this was an email sent by a member of the public.

I just want to say Big Thank You to all the ushers who have worked extremely hard during the Conference. Throughout the 5 days, my encounters with the ushers have been really pleasant. They are ever so helpful, always smiling, despite the difficult crowd at times.

There was once while I was queuing to enter the hall, when a group of upset foreign delegates were asking to be let into the hall. The door usher was a petite, young girl of not more than 18. She was pleasant yet firm, and was not daunted by the large crowd. Her gentle words of assurance and tact in handling the adults displayed much wisdom. I was really impressed.

Throughout the 5 days, more than the messages, the ushers' attitude truly impacted me. There are frequent incidences when ushers were reprimanded by members, delegates, greeters, yet they tried their best to be pleasant while getting their job done. I'm touched by the ushers, many of them are so young, their servanthood is really commendable.

We showcased many remarkable talents and programmes on stage during the Asia conference, but the church also showcased a great people with great attitude off-stage. That's why I sincerely think they are the unsung heroes. I would like to thank all of them for going the extra mile, I'm sure many echoed my sentiments.

Thank you ushers for going the extra mile, the conference was a remarkable success and a pleasant experience for attendees like me because of your hard word.

You guys are truly the unsung heroes of Asia Conference.

Exodus: did it really happened?

Just bought a documentary film on how after 6 yrs of research, History Channel found incontrovertible proof that everything written in the bible did happened!

The pharaoh who withstand against Moses, his half brother,
The 10 plagues,
The parting of the Re(e)d Sea,
The Exodus,
And.. The real Mount Sinai...

In The Beginning

The God who had no beginning made the beginning, and empowered everything that he made to also create new beginnings.

He implanted the principle of the seed into all of creation.

The power of creation lives within every one of us - genetically, inventively, artistically and verbally - all of us have been empowered by our Creator to also be creative.

The astonishing truth that belies the breadth of human thinking is that once we were not.
You, me, we did not exist.

We were nowhere. Not created. Not being.

But somehow out of nothing, God formed and fashioned us, we are self aware.

We have an environment, the universe, both small and endless with which we interact.

There are moments when the mind simply cannot fathom this vast fact. Yet the endless God created the beginning.

You and I have been created as part of his awesome plan, an amazing adventure.

Martha

Every church needs a Martha.
Change that.

Every church needs a hundred Marthas.
Sleeves rolled and ready, they keep the pace for the church.
Because of Marthas, the church budget gets balanced, the church babies get bounced, and the church building gets built.
You don't appreciate Marthas until a Martha is missing, and then all the Marys and Lazaruses are scrambling around looking for the keys and the thermostats and the overhead projectors.

Marthas are the Energizer bunnies of the church.
They keep going and going and going.
They store strength like a camel stores water.

Since they don't seek the spotlight, they don't live off the applause.
That's not to say they don't need it.
They just aren't addicted to it.

Marthas have a mission.
In fact, if Marthas have a weakness, it is their tendency to elevate the mission over the Master.

Remember when Martha did that?
A younger Martha invites a younger Jesus to come for dinner.
Jesus accepts and brings his disciples.

The scene Luke describes has Mary seated and Martha fuming.
Martha is angry because Mary is, horror of horrors, sitting at the feet of Jesus.

How impractical!
How irrelevant!
How unnecessary!

I mean, who has time to sit and listen when there is bread to be baked, tables to be set, and souls to be saved?
So Martha complained, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me alone to do all the work? Tell her to help me" (Luke 10:40).

All of a sudden Martha has gone from serving Jesus to making demands of Jesus.
The room falls silent.
The disciples duck their eyes.
Mary flushes red.
And Jesus speaks.

"Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things.
Only one thing is important. Mary has chosen the better thing, and it will never be taken away from her" (Luke 10:41--42).

Apparently Martha got the point, for later we find her serving again.

"Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor.
Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him.
Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair.
And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume" (John 12:2--3 NIV).

Is Mary in the kitchen?
No she is worshiping, for that is what she loves to do.
But this time Martha doesn't object.

She has learned that there is a place for praise and worship, and that is what Mary is doing.
And what is Mary's part in the dinner?
She brings a pint of very expensive perfume and pours it on Jesus' feet, then wipes his feet with her hair.
The smell of the perfume fills the house, just like the sound of praise can fill a church.

An earlier Martha would have objected.
Such an act was too lavish, too extravagant, too generous.

But this mature Martha has learned that just as there is a place in the kingdom of God for sacrificial service, there is also a place for extravagant praise.

He Understands

I know I'd read that passage a hundred times.
But I'd never seen it.
Maybe I'd passed over it in the excitement of the resurrection.
But I won't miss it again.

It's highlighted in yellow and underlined in red.
You might want to do the same.

Look in Mark, chapter 16.
Read the first five verses about the women's surprise when they find the stone moved to the side.
Then feast on that beautiful phrase spoken by the angel, "He is not here, he is risen," but don't pause for too long.

Go a bit further.
Get your pencil ready and enjoy this jewel in the seventh verse (here it comes).

The verse reads like this: "But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee.

Did you see it?
Read it again. (This time I italicized the words.)

"But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee."

Now tell me if that's not a hidden treasure.

What a line.

It's as if all of heaven had watched Peter fall--and it's as if all of heaven wanted to help him back up again.
"Be sure and tell Peter that he's not left out. Tell him that one failure doesn't make a flop."

Whew!

No wonder they call it the gospel of the second chance.

Not many second chances exist in the world today.

Just ask the kid who didn't make the little league team or the fellow who got the pink slip or the mother of three who got dumped for a "pretty little thing."

Not many second chances.

Nowadays it's more like, "It's now or never."
"Around here we don't tolerate incompetence."
"Not much room at the top."
"Three strikes and you're out."
"It's a dog-eat-dog world!"

Jesus has a simple answer to our masochistic mania.

"It's a dog-eat-dog world?" he would say.
"Then don't live with the dogs."

That makes sense doesn't it?
Why let a bunch of other failures tell you how much of a failure you are?

Sure you can have a second chance.

Just ask Peter.

The message came loud and clear from the celestial Throne Room through the divine courier.
"Be sure and tell Peter that he gets to bat again."

It's not every day that you get a second chance.
Peter must have known that.

The next time he saw Jesus, he got so excited that he barely got his britches on before he jumped into the cold water of the Sea of Galilee.
It was also enough, so they say, to cause this backwoods Galilean to carry the gospel of the second chance all the way to Rome where they killed him.

If you've ever wondered what would cause a man to be willing to be crucified upside down, maybe now you know.

It's not every day that you find someone who will give you a second chance--much less someone who will give you a second chance every day.
But in Jesus, Peter found both.

He Can Do The Impossible

The kingdom of heaven.
Its citizens are drunk on wonder.

Consider the case of Sarai.
She is in her golden years, but God promises her a son.
She gets excited.
She visits the maternity shop and buys a few dresses.
She plans her shower and remodels her tent ...
But no son.

She eats a few birthday cakes and blows out a lot of candles ...
Still no son.

She goes through a decade of wall calendars ...
Still no son.

So Sarai decides to take matters into her own hands.
("Maybe God needs me to take care of this one.")

She convinces Abram that time is running out.
("Face it, Abe, you ain't getting any younger, either.")

She commands her maid, Hagar, to go into Abram's tent and see if he needs anything.
("And I mean 'anything'!")

Hagar goes in a maid.
She comes out a mom.
And the problems begin.

Hagar is haughty.
Sarai is jealous.
Abram is dizzy from the dilemma.

And God calls the baby boy a "wild donkey"
An appropriate name for one born out of stubbornness and destined to kick his way into history.

It isn't the cozy family Sarai expected.
And it isn't a topic Abram and Sarai bring up very often at dinner.

Finally, fourteen years later, when Abram is pushing a century of years and Sarai ninety ...
When Abram has stopped listening to Sarai's advice, and Sarai has stopped giving it ...
When the wallpaper in the nursery is faded and the baby furniture is several seasons out of date ...
When the topic of the promised child brings sighs and tears and long looks into a silent sky ...

God pays them a visit and tells them they had better select a name for their new son.

Abram and Sarai have the same response:
Laughter.

They laugh partly because it is too good to happen and partly because it might.
They laugh because they have given up hope, and hope born anew is always funny before it is real.
They laugh at the lunacy of it all.
They laugh because that is what you do when someone says he can do the impossible.

They laugh a little at God, and a lot with God--for God is laughing, too.
Then, with the smile still on His face, He gets busy doing what He does best--the unbelievable.

He changes a few things
Beginning with their names.
Abram, the father of one, will now be Abraham, the father of a multitude.
Sarai, the barren one, will now be Sarah, the mother.

But their names aren't the only things God changes.
He changes their minds.
He changes their faith.
He changes the number of their tax deductions.
He changes the way they define the word impossible.
